Short planned obsolesence
2008-06-23
|
| It's quite annoying when a product has to be thrown away after 2-3 years because the cost of a minor repair is greater than the cost of a new one. Our HP Office Jet 5510 no longer feeds paper and the Geek Squad says replacing the barrings costs more than a replacement. Do we need to be a throw-away society? I'll do more research before buying next time. |

Is your document feeder failing to feed documents ? Did the problem happen right after a feeder jam ? Read for solution
2008-06-11
|
This isn't some smart-aleck review of "go buy a different all in one", I'm going to describe how to fix the document feeder issue when you've just cleared a feeder jam.
This solution is especially applicable if you notice when the document feeder is trying to take in documents, you notice an assembly of rubber wheels retracts towards the lid instead of depressing to the paper stack to begin the feed process.
1. Unplug the device, but you don't have to since you won't be coming into contact with any electrical contacts.
2. Open the top panel which houses the dial pad and LCD, the latch to open the top panel is under the green Color Copy button and is pressed upwards towards the ceiling and inwards towards the device.
3. After the top panel is open, open it until you encounter resistance, if necessary you can flex it and it will break a small peg on the back of the device but it isn't necessary and sometimes a really insidious jam requires deep access to the platen.
4. Notice the center pair of rubber rollers on the inside or ceiling of the top latch, while holding the top latch, pull the pair of rollers and you'll feel resistance and gently continue to pull it until you hear a snap and noticeable release of the resistance.
5. Close the top lid and verify the document feeder works again.
This happens because a jam is often cleared in reverse and this pulling of your document in reverse unseats the roller assembly where it rests too high in the lid, in the past I've been able to solve this 1/100 times by closing the lid and while using a screwdriver to scroll the gears by the myth and inventing new forms of profanity resulting from frustration and no results.
When you pull the assembly away from the lid, this resets it back to normal position.
Good luck. |

It dies after less than 2 years.

| I helped my friend to set up this printer when she first got it. The set up is a smooth one, and it worked ok. But after lightly usage for less than 2 years, it just died. I brought it to the printer maintenance shop, and the technician commented this particular HP model is known to have the problem with its main board. He's run into quite a lot of them died of the main board. Of course, it's not worthwhile to replace the main board cause it costs US$80, about the same price my friend paid for the AIO itself. |

| WOW! For the money, this little printer-fax-scanner-copies is a real jewel and a workhorse. I've used mine for a lot of printing more than anything else, and it has never let me down. I recommend it to anyone. |
