good printer - HP slacks on ink and paper 2002-04-30
I replaced an HP 694... The 960cse does an admirable job but who the heck is HP fooling? Yes, they give you 1 color and 1 black ink cartridge... Unfortunately, the black is a "starter" cartridge (For those not familiar with the HP term "starter" it means half full!!!) which will get you back to the store to buy another in half the time - At the price of new ink, they should be giving a coupon for the other half of the ink they left out of the cartridge... And HP should loosen up with the paper quantity - You will get a ream of 6 sheets with your new printer (enough to be dazzled by the great print quality when testing out your new purchase but not enough to really do any serious printing)... I'm glad they included the cord (no USB cord just a power cord) and the driver CD... I like the product but HP doesn't make the PR grade for me...
A great buy to replace a slower HP printer 2002-04-11
I replaced an HP812c with this model for my small business and I love it! The print quality is excellent, even though I thought the 812 did a nice job. And the speed is very satisfactory. This is a good solid printer for a small business and I'm glad I bought it.
Bad! Broke first day... 2002-04-06
Well, this was pretty ugly. I bought this printer happily for a mere 200 dollars, and hoped it would work fine. I had owned an Hp720c before, and that served me well, untill it toppled off my stand and broke. I soon after bought the Deskjet 960c, setup was a little lengthy, although almost fully automated, everything was just fine. It printed two amazing prints on photo paper. I was overjoyed at the quality and outstanding speed. Next morning, I tried printing a 20 page text document, and it took some time for the printer to process the request, although I use a USB connection; following that, it printed the first 5 pages, ripped the next two, then jammed. I tried using different paper, everything. Still, no luck. I wouldn't buy it if I were you, go for something more reliable.
good printer 2002-04-03
This printer is mac compatible. The driver is already installed in the new imac and ibook running OSX. Truly plug 'n play. We have not had any paper jams or any other problems with it. It runs very quiet and the print and graphics quality is very nice. Good all-around printer at a reasonable price.
Replacement for an Epson 640c 2002-04-03
My Epson was loud, obnoxious and refused to print anything other than lines of dots after I upgraded to win2k. I'd purchased an HP Scanner previously and found it excellent so I decided to switch brands and pickup the 960cse printer.

I wanted to use the USB connectivity with this printer so I also purchased a USB hub to increase the number of available ports on my pc from 2 to 5.

Printer came well packaged with ink etc. No cord but I purchased one myself. I followed the instructions which came in a giant pull out poster. My pc detected the printer but when I pointed the hardware wizard at the hp driver on the CD it wouldn't install it yielding a "section not found in the xyz.ini" file.
So I tried again, this time disregarding the HP driver and going with the USB printer support option that comes with windows. This installed fine and THEN detected that my printer was an HP 960cse and set it up.

After that little hiccup the thing works GREAT. It comes with some REALLY well thought out software that integrates with most everything andhas nice options depending on what you're printing. Example is a photo can be "titled" whereas a document won't have that option.

Printing is FAST although the printer takes 60 seconds to first warm up. After that black and white printing just zips along. Color is also much faster than my epson. The nice thing about this is printer is I can use regular copier paper to print in color and the printer detects this and adjusts the amount of ink accordingly. On my old printer it would have spat out a page with too much ink, making the page all flimsy and wet. This one is not the case.

The other thing about this printer is the sound it makes, it's so quiet almost relaxing to listen to. Nice.

Anyway, I highly recommend spending the extra [money] over the 940c although with the USB cable and hub... Still you get what you pay for.
