Build quality awesome, performance not bad!

I got a few night vision devices from here to test out in Big Bend National Park. Though I like this one's build quality, I don't know that it is worth the asking proce in comparison to Bushnell's Double Infrared monocular. After testing them both, this one has a cleaner light available throughout the entire looking glass, so to speak. The others I tried had a hotter center spot.
The thing about that is that the hotter center was because the light "threw" further. I believe that the Bushnell Double IR puts out a little more range/light to see stuff further away. This one is built like a tank though, so I'd probably opt to take it in my backpack up a mountain or wherever without fear of damaging it.
Quirks I didn't like were the flip switches versus the easy push button of the Bushnell, but then again that means this is harder to activate by mistake. I also didn't like the unscrew lens cover. It doesn't attach to anything, just comes off. At night that could be a problem if you drop it or put it someplace without thinking. Bushnell's has an attached cover that is hard to misplace.
I put velcro tape on the cover and underneath the device itself to make sure I always know where the cap is when I take it off. Other than that, I can't fault it that bad. It is good quality and it does an amazing job for the generation of night vision this is.
I would have to say though that looking back, I *might* have opted for the Bushnell Double and skipped this if I'd tried 'em both in the field before buying them. After having it though, it is hard to give it up. I am keeping both to use like I said... One for roadside car situations, and one for backpacking/rugged use. Even though this has less IR light throw, it is still very respectable. |

Unreliable for me

I took good care of it. Never dropped. Broke after only a couple months. Total usage - maybe 20 times. Unbelievable. Other than that it was pretty good.

Perfect.

I purchased this item because I was curious about night vision scopes and wanted to have a basic model. Since then I have used it to help catch a runaway pet as it works quite well at night and the IR illuminator lights up animal eyes making them easier to see. I also used it to watch a police foot chase through my neighborhood and had no trouble seeing where everyone was hiding. Overall I am very happy with this product.

Night Owl Explorer Pro 5x Night Vision Scope w/I/R Illuminator

This scope would have a better score by me if it would work properly. As of now it doesn't focus on infinity because focusing rings were assembled incorrectly. Will attempt to repair...

Night Owl Explorer Pro 5x Night Vision Scope w/I/R Illuminator

I had never owned a night vision scope so I was shopping carefully. While I do love this unit after having it a month I find that it is a heavy item and also large, no not so large or heavy that it's a problem, I guess I just thought it would be a bit smaller and lighter. I had read somewhere that one of the units I was reviewing actually floated and was water resistant. I am a tough gadget shopper and I am glad I own this still. Now as for night vision... woooohooo I can see my dog chasing who knows what in our rural backyard in the pitch black I cant keep up with that focus. I can see 1000 feet away in between trees I didn't even know were there in the dark and I can zoom in down an east coast beach in the dark so well I can tell what that person is doing. It has 2 lenses that can be focused one on your eyepiece and one on the lens so focus well. The IR works well and maybe even too well at close range. ** NOW I bought the "Night Owl Lens Doubler "as it was touted as an accessory for this item. It is not; do not buy that for this unit.
