very cooooool. 2007-05-12
cool camera but i don't see why it has to be so expensive. You're pretty much paying for the color filters and a funky shaped camera. ah lomo, you're so greedy.
Great invention in photography. 2007-05-07
Its incredibly fun to shoot with this little thing, it feels really cheap, and is really cheap, yet its worth the money. Just be very delicate with the flash wheel when turning it and definitely don't let it drop as this results in instant death of the camera. The flash filters vary in intensity (red is too bright, blue hardly does anything) but this camera definitely flourishes at nighttime. Its really cool doing a long exposure with a flash at the end, there are plenty of cool tricks you can do with this camera that you can't do with others. I think the main strong point of this camera is that the flash goes off at the end of the shot rather than at the beginning, plus the colors make any shot interesting. Here are some samples I've taken with it.

An Expensive Piece of Defective Plastic 2007-04-20
The camera package seemed to have opened before when it came. Plus the camera itself is dirty and doesn't look brand new. The camera is indeed a piece of junk plastic as some other users said. Colorsplash is a fun camera to play with and it produces artistic. But only buy it if you have too much money to waste. Consider buying a Holga if you want a better and cheaper lomo and don't mind shooting 120.
So much fun! 2007-03-19
I got this camera for my friend for her birthday about a month ago. We have had so much fun with it ever since. It takes the coolest photos. I have and Oktomat and a Holga which I love, but this one is fun for taking out on the town or to a bar. It's unique look is also a good ice-breaker/conversation starter. I'm back on Amazon to get one for myself!
fun purchase 2007-03-13
Very nice camera overall. I've had it for a month and I have not had any problems with it. I love it.
Wonderful Camera! 2007-03-12
The camera is cute and very easy to set-up; definately worth it.
Came in the mail quickly and cute packaging, too!
Pleasantly Surprised 2007-01-10
I bought this camera with some cash I got for Christmas, because I wanted a small fun 35mm to carry around, but I didnt want a Holga and the Horizon Kompakt or Perfekts were too expensive. My other cameras are high end professionals (Nikon F1, Mamyia C33 and Mamyia RB), and never really got around to experimenting with cross processing and color gels, so I thought this camera would be appropriate for lo fi fun.

After reading the reviews on here, it seemed like most complained about the cheapness of the camera, found it inoperable upon delivery, broke parts, etc. Folks, Im not sure what you were expecting, or know the other types of cameras that Lomo produces, but they are CHEAP TOY CAMERAS. They are not meant to be high quality photo wonders. They are meant to be simple, have light leaks, take weird, interesting photos and thats it.

I was almost expecting a total piece of crap after reading the other reviews, but i was more than happy with the quality of this little camera. When held, it feels solid. The little winder does feel a bit cheap, but this is to be expected. The color gels are easy to change out (I can use my stubby fingernail to get the door off), but dont expect to be able to do it on the fly. It does take a small amount of tinkering.

It came in a really unique packaging system that can be kept to store the camera and its documentation over and over, and is great if you travel alot or are moving. The unique 3 piece protective cover for the camera is an ugly teal and forest green concoction, but it fits the camera well and black vinyl spray paint from the auto parts store will fix that easily (the stuff lasts a lifetime). Im excited to see how the pictures turn out.

Expect a fun to use and fun to look at camera to take with you on your daily excursions, and then upload them to the lomography.com website to share!
I don't reccomend this item. 2007-01-10
Cheaply made. The rewind knob broke the first time using it. I had to rewind the film by dark room. Definately not worth its price. You could get the same effect with any other camera covering the flash with a clear colored plastic.
really nice camera, lots of fun 2007-01-10
The Colorsplash is a really cool little camera. It's definately a specialty camera and isn't meant to take family vacation photos, but adds some really neat dimensions to artistic lomo photos. It's easy to use, well designed, and the packaging is cool.
JUNK! 2006-08-11
I had been wanting this camera for a while, since my boss showed it to me online. The things I saw online made it look so cool. I'm a camera buff. Finally decided to order it, I even paid extra for next day shipping. I was excited to get home to try it out. As soon as I opened the package and picked it up, I realized how cheaply made it is. I loaded the film according to the directions, but the advance mechanism didn't work right. It would just tear the film at the little gripper hole things. I thought maybe it was my error or defective film or something. I went out and bought another 2 rolls of film to try. Same thing! The advance wheel feels so cheap and notchy. The design of the advance wheel is terrible also. It doesn't grip the film positively. I packaged the camera back up, and now am returning it. I guess I have to eat the extra shipping costs and cost of the film I bought to try it the second time. What a waste of money! Don't buy this!!! :( Look for a quality camera.
take the colorsplash with a pinch of salt. 2006-02-17
Not related to the performance of the camera - mine arrived missing the lid - and it looked like it had previously been opened - however I bought it "new" of amazon. I was nonetheless excited and it looked like nothing (minus the lid) was missing so I set it up and got to shooting.

I can't say if the film was tricky or not to load. Reason being is that I don't have much experience loading film so I can't make an accurate comparison.

Pros: The three rolls I churned out right away came out really neat and fun. So it accomplishes what it claims, it takes good photos, I can't deny that.

Cons: The colorwheel design. In my opinion it was as though the designers spent most of their design time and budget on the wheel idea and then rushed through everything else, resulting in a bad overall design. What the websites related to the colorsplash sheepishly WONT tell you is that not only do you NOT have 4 slots with which to load color gels, you only have two, with the two others permanent (a blue and yellow). Right away I felt like the online descriptions were very misleading regarding this and it is extremely limiting. It would be one thing if the gels were easily interchanged but they are not, requiring tweezers or some equivalent (not included, but reccomended in the manual), not feasible if you are out, especially at night. Plus if you wanted to have a default unfiltered flash, it means you would only get one color option in addition to the default blue and yellow - not that great in my opinion. I think that as camera that is billed as a simple camera with its main selling point being an outstanding flash device it fails horribly. If you don't really require the variety that the colorsplash falsely advertises, you should be fine.

In addition to that, my camera broke withing the first 24 hours. The plastic part of the camera that the strap is connected to broke off, very easilly, considering I barely had the camera - but that could have been a unique defect, or maybe missing the lid it moved around in shipping cracking that part of the plastic - I will probably never know. Although the mechanism was unaffected (as far as I knew) I wasn't comfortable with any part of it breaking off in under 24 hours and returned the camera.
its a waste 2006-01-01
If you already have a camera with a hot shoe attachment on it, then you should probably just go ahead and get the colorsplash flash attachment rather than this camera. The flash is like 30 dollars, while this camera is 70. you pay 40 dollars for a plastic camera body that may or may not work great (mine didnt). If you want the interesting photos that come with colorsplash cameras, just go ahead and get the flash.
DON'T BUY 2005-12-07
If I could give this camera 0 stars I would, it stinks. My story on this camera is a way too long one to explain. All I have to say is that I am very mad that I wasted (...)on a piece of crap. If you listen to me you will be better off!
fun camera 2005-10-06
this camera is so fun yet simple, the colored flash gives you so many options and i love it. its well worth the $70. i also love the long exposure feature the results look great. i definetly recommend this camera over some of the other lomography cameras because its so versitle.
wonderfully unique 2005-07-07
the colorsplash is totally unique. its compact and easy to use and is just what i was looking for. with 12 colorgels, the sky is the limit. you can mix colors on the flash, split colors, whatever. then, to add to things, you can use a gel and put it on the lens and use a color flash to truly paint your world in a way you would have never seen. plus the long exposure makes wild and streaky and super cool pictures. very artsy, tres cool. in conclusion...:highly recommended.
perfect for poseurs 2005-02-24
Two quiet revolutions in photography--the Lomo and Diana/Holga--added a new level on how artists view their work. Unfortunately, so many seem to think that by simple buying and using these devices, they will make instant art. Now a whole slew of cheap hunks of plastic sold at inflated prices are flooding the market, feasting upon this followers mentality.

If you really want to experiment with color-flashing, buy color filters (or scavenge for random tinted transparent materials) and experiment on the flash of a decent camera--or if you are into plastic, then get a holga. This process will not only teach you so much more about what processes produce what effects, but you'll actually create something new, you'll be using a creative process. This thing is not a creative tool, it is an unimaginative $3 hunk of plastic being cleverly marketed and sold for an astonishing price that sucks any creative possibilities out of the user.
Color Your World 2004-12-10
The Color Splash is like photographic rock and roll. I love the long-exposure with colored-flash style - it's really cool. You end up with a bright, colored subject against a glowing background. If you wave the camera around with the shutter open, you can place these crazy streaks of light behind your subject as well. There's no other camera that can do this, and its white body is dead sexy.

As another reviewer mentioned, a tripod thread would be nice, (Lomo, can you hear me??) but I can live without it for the time being. Be sure to use 400 or 800 speed film - that way you'll maximize your flash range. Also, get close when you use the purple or red filters, they block a lot of light and your shot can be really underexposed if you're too far away.
The Colorsplash Spectacle 2004-10-06
The Colorsplash from the Lomographic Society is a gift from GOD to all photographers.

I am a serious and avid photographer and was looking for a simple yet fun camera to take with me on the go (and rule one, after all, is "take your camera everywhere"). The colored flash is a creative idea that adds to an already brillant camera. The simplicity of the Colorsplash allows for the user to take a picture within a second's notice with dreamy, streaky results. The flashes are fun to play with and fun to adjust.

The flash comes with two colors already put in - yellow and blue - and allows for you to pick and chose which other colors you want to put in the other two avaliable slots. If you follow the simple directions as listed in the little booklet the comes with the camera, you'll have no problem removing and changing out the different filters for the flash.

A few drawbacks include the handcrank for when your finished with your film and need to rewind it. Once, i forgot that the handcrank had to be turned in a certain way and broke off a tiny piece of it. It was no big loss and the crank still functions without the little tiny piece at the end, but it just goes to show how fragile this little wonder can be. Another drawback is the price. Thankfully, amazon.com offers it for a few dollars lower than lomography.com. However, i feel with as many times as i have used this camera, the sixty something dollars is well worth it. Also, the cover that it comes with is just a piece of junk. It covers up the back of the camera and makes it difficult to unload your film once your done (especially if you unload at the rate i do)

The Colorsplash camera was my first introduction into the fine art of Lomography and I hope it won't be my last. Be prepared to paint your world in vivd, living colors and be spontaneous with your photographs =)
Lots of fun,a little expensive 2004-09-14
I've had this camera for a little over a month and I've had a blast with it! I've gotten tons of great pictures from it, including some surprisingly good daytime shots, with and without the flash.

It's pretty expensive for what it is, but I've never seen anything like the Colosplash's colorwheel, so I was willing to pay.

I chose this over other lomography cameras because it's more versatile (35mm film, can take "normal" pictures)and because it's a lot more affordable than, say an LCA.

And despite the overt marketing ploys, I like the manufacturer's website a lot. You can sign up for a free "LomoHome" and post all your pictures and see other people's pictures too! I really like having a forum to display my shots, since I'm not a professional and nobody would ever see them otherwise!

Check of the manufacturers website: www.lomography.com for more detailed information, and to see what the pictures come out looking like. You'll most likely get a better price here on Amazon though.

Cheaply made, but you have no choice 2004-05-14
There aren't many "basic" cameras out there for "artsy" photos. This one is not high tech at all, instead its made of plastic and has a plastic lens and manual feed. The color filters make it interesting but I question if it is worth the $70. Fun though, and being a part of the LoMo revolution is cool.
very fun camera! 2004-02-24
I got this for Christmas and have used it several times. The results have been terrific! With some experimentation, I learned that the red filter is very strong so I use it less than the others, but it has been great for taking pictures at parties and concerts and clubs and bars. Rock and roll photos! I lost my little packet of filters, and the wonderful people at lomo international sent me two replacement packs for free! Customer service is great. I do not like the skin bag, however. It is inconvenient and gets in the way. After having it block the lens on a roll of film, I just ditched it altogether. Otherwise, I recommend this camera fully.
color me beautiful 2004-02-18
this is the most fabulous invention ever. i had been experimenting quite a bit with colorgels, but to find this put together in a camera is simply fantastique! thanks to the lomo people, thanks, thanks, thanks,
in addition to the colorflash this camera also has different exposure settings, very simple and working really great.
enjoy and splash your world in colors, there are no limits anymore, it is all up to you and what color you want your world and surrounding to be!!!
I Lurrrve It! 2004-01-30
This camera brought joy to all my friends. It's a whoel new world of photography. It's fun and it looks cool too.Whenever i take it out of my bag and started shooting, strangers will start looking at me and my colorsplash, it's a totally unique camera with colored flash. Overall the camera itself is cool, but i do wish they came out with other colors rather than white. The camera came with a very cool box and manuals.

The only complain i have is the cover for the camera, it's seperated in 3 parts where u sort of have to help your camera "put some clothes on". It's quite hectic at times when u just wanna get hold of ur camera and just start shooting.

Apart from all the cameras i have, digital/film , this one's the most artistic of all.

So far only one complaint. 2004-01-08
So far, I like this camera. The only shortcoming I see is that there isn't a place in the bottom of the camera in which you can mount it on a tripod. That would come very useful in low light situations when you're trying to achieve certain effects.
grrr 2003-12-30
The colored flashes seemed like a fun idea, but I broke this camera within 10 minutes of removing it from its excessive packaging. I was trying to change the color filters, and the cap on the color wheel wouldn't stay on when I tried to replace it. And then the flash charge button broke and I gave up. Try the Lomographic Compact Automat 35MM instead. Holgas are fun too.
