Not worth the money 2004-09-15
Just as everyone else stated, this is a great compact, cool looking camera. Pictures have turned out okay. Some were blurry but I suspect it may be the lighting. Outdoor pics were clear as the sky. However, I have a lot of problem with loading and unloading the film. Sometimes the camera would keep rolling sounding like it would load the film but when it stops making noise the cartridge symbol blinks asking you to put in the film. And when it finally loads correctly and finishes rewinding the film, the door gets stuck and would not open. It's quite frustrating. I'm going to get a refund and I suggest not getting this camera at all especially for this price. You should probably go with their digital elph camera instead.
don't buy 2004-07-28
I purchased an elph for the size and the fact it takes panaramics. At first I was happy with it, it took good pictures, was easy to load and unload, and was compact. After about 3-4 months I was in the keys with my friends when we took our last picture on the film, it would not rewind not even manually. I brought it to a camera place to see if they could get the film out and they told me to send it back to canon. The door was stuck and he did not want to ruin it. I did happen to eventually get the film out myself but the camera still did not work so I sent it in (supposively under warranty) and they wanted to charge me $75 to fix it. I suggest looking for another camera.
WAY better than 35mm 2004-07-08
I'm not sure what has caused people to complain so much about this camera, it is the best I have ever owned and believe me, I KNOW cameras! I've taken hundreds of pictures (literally) and have competed in several shows with great results. And I tell you, Canon Elph is a tiny camera that packs a punch!

I bought this camera two years ago for a trip to Europe. I wanted to have something small with special features. The zoom, panoramic, dates and special subject lines, easy load small film, etc. I was TOTALLY impressed!

I took 30 rolls of film in rapid succession, within a period of 3 weeks. I didn't develop any of the film while in Europe, and even after ALL of my film, exposed and unexposed, passed through all the metal detectors of different airports, palaces, etc. it had FANTASTIC quality! In fact, the pictures of me are some of the best ever taken, other than some childhood shots and my high school senior pictures taken by a professional! These Elph pictures, held next to 35mm pictures from both my old Pentax and my Canon manual professional camera, were not any different. Mixed up, no one could tell which pictures were taken by what camera!

I loved how the film was just drop and load. It was harder to get dirty or install wrong and IMPOSSIBLE to accidentally expose to light. NOT so with my old Pentax 35 MM autofocus camera! Plus, the neat thing with Advantix film is that you can take a few pictures, rewind the film, load a new roll for different types of pictures, rewind that and load the other roll of film only partially used! With this feature, I was able to keep castles on one roll, statues on another, paintings on yet another roll!
The camera was dropped more than once, nothing broke! The metal corner bent (that's how bad the fall was) and the picture quality was not affected at all! The sliding face wasn't a problem for me to get used to, just don't slide it fast! Slide it just a little ways back towards the lens when you want to shut it off and it will recede back into the camera then you can close it fully.

I have now used this camera often for the last two years, including a family reunion. Every picture has been great (except the ones I personally messed up like not turning on the flash when needed) and I have recommended it to my friends. Nothing has been grainy, no red eye, nothing! Everything has been clear and bright! Just remember to use 400 or higher speed film, 200 and 100 definitely reduce the picture quality. I used Kodak and tried to get MAX, not regular.

I hope to join an art study program and go back to Europe next summer. The Elph will definitely be going along! Cute and functional!

Ruined my trip! 2004-03-04
I have to say I am completely disappointed with this product. I purchased it from Best Buy the day before I left for a trip to Utah. The first roll: it stopped taking pictures after the 17th one. I had to put in a new roll. The second roll: it stopped functioning after the 22nd picture. I was devastated. I developed the pictures and most of them have red eyes, and the quality is horrible. I am shocked that this product passed Canon's quality controls. I have another Canon camera that I am crazy about. I have returned the new one; I wish I had read the reviews on Amazon.com before buying it. Trust me...DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!
Disapointing 2004-02-23
I got this camara as a gift and liked this camara a lot although the door never closed quite right and then just a year later it broke and they want to charge me $100 to fix it! It's a good camara but badly designed. Not worth it, I suggest you keep looking.
Disappointed 2004-01-21
My hubby purchased this as a present for me. During the first roll of film the "H" light started flashing and I haven't been able to get the camera working since. Have changed the battery. Upon researching I discovered that this is a common problem with this model and there is a hefty price to have it repaired. I have owned less than a month and will be returning it to the retailer today.
Unreliable product and poor after sales care 2004-01-06
Don't buy this camera unless you have money to throw away. The camera was a little over one year old and we had probably shot less than 8 rolls of film. Towards the end of the film, it jammed and we had to send the camera back to Canon to be fixed. After 6 weeks the camera shop called us to say that Canon had returned the camera to them with a note that said they had tried to contact us about the repair bill and because we didn't respond they assumed we didn't want to pay. We had not received any contact or quote from them. The camera shop finally managed to get hold of someone at Canon after calling them for 2 days and they quoted us $115 to fix it, which included a "thorough clean". Gee whizz. No thanks. We saved our money and bought a new Pentax camera that WORKS.
Unreliable Pricing 2003-12-08
Amazon had listed the Canon Elph Z3 for $129.94 and now they raised the price to $149.88. They don't even include the camera case and film that most of the other vendors offer with the camera. This is NOT good business, expecially during the holidays. I would not buy from Amazon for their unprofessional practices.
Great camera 2003-11-15
It's the perfect size to keep in a purse or carry in a pocket. The quality is great. I love this camera.
expensive disposable camera 2003-09-25
This camera broke within a year. Canon did not back their product and when they sent it back to me it was inoperable and unusable.
Tiny, feature rich, and it works well 2003-08-06
Having owned several small APS cameras, I can safely tell you that this one is a winner. The Z3 has a decent 2.3 times optical zoom (I prefer a 3x, but this is pretty good), very small size, and excellent battery life (over 25 rolls/battery, vs. under 10 for many other cameras). It also has some of the minor features that prove useful, including date and time encoding, mid roll rewind and load, and basic control over the flash (4 modes).

If you've never used the APS format before you will be impressed by the small camera size and image results, as long as you stick with 4x6 prints. If you require 35mm results with enlargements, go elsewhere. This has nothing to do with this camera, its all in the film size. You might be able to enlarge to 5x7, but no further. These are really tiny negatives and the images get grainy when you enlarge them too much.

I've seen some complaints about reliability, but after a hundred rolls or so this camera has been flawless. It did take us a roll or so to get used to the turning the camera off (you slide the lens cover over), but once you get the hang of pressing the cover in just a bit before sliding it, it comes easy.

I'd also suggest that you check out the Canon 370Z camera. While it is a bit bigger and has shorter battery life (I've averaged 8-9 rolls per battery at best), the zoom is a full 3x, meaning that you can zoom in a bit more. That can be useful, although I have not missed it as much witht his camera as I expected.

Don't waste your money! 2003-07-16
I've taken 6 rolls of film with this camara and have been so dissapointed. The pictures are very grainy and the colors are not at all bright. I've tried playing around with the flash and making sure I have enough light, and have also tried different speed films and the photos are still very poor quality. I originally bought this camara for the small size, but will be looking for another.
This Is this best camera 2003-06-11
This Camera is the best camera i ever bought. I am an expert on cameras and I know Quality when I see it.
Canon Elph Z3 Zoom 2003-05-28
I bought this camera approximately one month ago. I've developed 4 rolls of film so far and I'm not at all impressed by the quality of the photos. My biggest complaint is red eyes. On almost every close up in both dark and light conditions, the subject's had red eyes. This camera suppossedly has red eye reduction...I've yet to see it produce results. I did however take some panoramic landscapes and they came out awesome. On another note, just like other people have mentioned, the camera looks cool and is small enough to fit in your pocket.
Canon Elph Z3 Zoom 2003-04-27
When I purchased the camera, I was impressed by its small size and the camera was easy to carry in my pocket. The camera was easy to use too. Unfortunately, the camera is poorly made, and the H light (signifying a mechanical problem) began flashing after the second roll of film. The camera lens failed to retract, and I had to take the camera to a repair shop for repairs. Buyer beware!
Is it true? 2003-03-25
This Camera saved my life!

Last spring I went on vacation with my girlfriend...

We were in Tokyo...just walking...talking..
shopping..having a great time.

It was 70 degrees..with a gentle cool breeze...
My girl looked great..I looked great.:)
It was the perfect day!
(OH! The camera...It was in the front pocket of
my jacket)

Then POW! out of no where a woman ran out of a shop..
hit me in the shoulder...She turned around looked directly in my eyes... raised her arm and fired a .38 caliber bullet into my chest. They said the force of the bullet knocked me back 8 feet..through the shop door....And....

I'm sure you all know what I'm about to write...YES!.. The bullet hit the stainless steel camera. Causing it to enter my lung instead of my heart.

I have now fully recovered from this tragic event.
The women that shot me claimed she was
having a nervous breakdown due to an abusive husband and an addiction problem. She is on the street again.
She never apologized.(thanks!)
I didn't get to keep the camera...it was used as evidence.
But I now have a new one....
It's a good camera...pictures are a bit grainy...but I'm not a very good photographer either..
This camera is easy to use, maintain and carry..I recommend the
front pocket. Have a great day! Wade...Texas.

Stick with 35mm 2003-02-03
In the camera store that I work at, we rarely sell APS cameras now that their novelty has worn off and this is why:

The frame size for APS film is LESS THAN HALF the size you get with 35mm film. This means that if you blow your pictures up, you will see much more of the grains. Also, there is a noticable difference even between using a 100 speed film (which you should give you the sharpest pictures) and the 200 speed film. The film quality is just bad and the selection is very limited.

APS film is more expensive, and it also cost more to get developed. It is even more if you shoot panoramics. As far as the film goes, if you purchase the value packs you can get 6 rolls of 35mm film for the price you would pay for 3 rolls of the same speed of APS film in many stores.

Instead of this camera, I suggest the Pentax IQzoom 130M. It has more than twice the zoom for LESS money! It also features an easy to use panorama mode if you like having that option. A 35mm camera is not hard to load, and the superior quality is well worth the 3 extra seconds it will take you to load film. You'll get more camera for your money and you'll be so much happier with your pictures.

BROKEN AFTER 1 USE!! 2003-02-01
Yeah, it's cute, but it doesn't work too well. The first roll was fine, and thereafter, the film wouldn't load properly. It took 8+ tries to get the film loaded the second time around. In the middle of my third roll, the camera just stopped working. The lens didn't engage after opening the shutter door.

I'm in the process of returning the camera to Cannon, which will take 3 weeks before I see it again.

I'm pretty unhappy with this cutie. If you buy it, get some kind of extended warranty.

hm... 2003-01-08
I bought the Z3 because of its extremely compact size and basic ease of use. I previously owned one of the higher-end Olympus Stylus cameras and found its performance 100% excellent, but too bulky to carry around. When it finally broke down (my fault, unfortunately) I bought this camera hoping to replace the other with one equally as good. I am here to tell you that the quality of pictures I have gotten so far from the camera is quite poor. If a subject (particularly, but not limited to, people) is more than five feet away the picture is without exception blurry and poorly lit. I am very disappointed with the camera, although in all other senses (e.g. film loading, size, and good looks) it is fine. However, since the photographs are the most important factors in a customer's satisfaction level, and indeed, the reason WHY we buy cameras... the Canon Elph Z3 is a bad deal and I wouldn't recommend it unless you needed a camera on the side for quick pictures. I carry it in my purse at all times (it is very tiny) which is convenient, I admit, for those Kodak (excuse me... Canon) moments you would have missed otherwise. But if you want great pictures, run screaming and tell your mom what the Canon company told you about the camera. Isn't it sad when companies market products that don't live up to their descriptions?
Not very impressive... 2003-01-04
We bought the Elph Z3 for our baby's first Christmas pictures and we are sorry that we did! Nearly every picuture was blurry and everyone had red-eyes...so much for red-eye reduction! What a disappointment!
FYI...APS film cost more to develop and even more for black and white film, some shops don't develop APS either.
I've had [cheap]cameras produce better pictures. The Z3 is getting returned today!
great little camera 2002-12-28
I received this camera for Christmas and it takes super pictures. I travel alot and the small compact size is great for my purse or briefcase. Excellent product
Cannon ELPH 2002-12-14
This camera works really well, and takes great pictures. Even though you have to buy Advantex film, it is worth it for the pictures you get.
Great Camera, has a problem, but just be careful 2002-09-29
I bought the Z3 about a week before we took a cruise to the Carribean, love the way it looked and handled, shot both Fuji and Kodak 400 speed film, have also shot this speed with and Elph 2 I have, the Z3 is a complete runaway, had the photos developed on shipboard, they did an excellent if not very expensive job, the results were just sensatiional, If I held it up to a 35mm print, you could not tell the difference, gorgeous color, great exposures, tack sharp lens and auto exposure system, this is a real winner except for one weak point, when you shut the camera off, the lens retracts inward, you can easily bang the door into the retracting lens, which I did on 3 occassions, twice knocking the door off the track, I fixed it myself by popping it back on, no damage, I think Canon could use a fix here, other than that, I,ll still give it a 5 rating, its a winner.
Took this camera on 8 nite /9 day Colorado River Raft Trip 2002-06-16
Space was at a premium on this trip and I wanted Panorama easily available. Also sunscreen would be heavily used (can damage camera frames) so metal case was ideal. Camera performed wonderfully and was so small it was easy to carry around and protect from water in Aquapac case. I didn't realize what a problem sand would be - again the Aquapac protected from both sand and water from rapids. The photos are great. I am enjoying using this camera to take photos of my triplet granddaughters also. It tucks into my purse or pocket with an extra roll of film. I have SLR APS which is about 8 times bigger and it is so much harder to drag it around as much as I love it! Thanks Canon.
I like it. 2002-06-13
This is an easy to use camera. The zoom feature works like a charm, and the picture, in any format, is framed well.
Just the right size! 2002-06-11
On my last vacation I got so tired of carrying around a large camera that I did not take many photos... However, when the old one played out I seized the opportunity to see what I could find in a smaller version... I fell in love with this little guy right away... However, when I got home, I started reading reviews of older APS cameras and became concerned. So I immediately shot one roll of film.. inside, outside, close, far away and took it to an hour developing center (more and more places are developing it now)... Along with that roll I took two 35mm rolls.. When I received the prints I compared them side by side and saw no difference in the quality of the prints... Also, it was only approximately 2.00 more per roll to develop than the 35mm.

What I love about this camera besides the convenience of the size is that you can take 3 different sizes of pictures with a flip of a switch and the date imprint on the picture.

The only drawbacks that I found was the lack of zoom (but I knew there would be a trade off for the small size) and the fact that I took one early evening photo which did not turn out very well... However, I discovered there is a 1000 speed film for the APS which hopefully will take care of that problem.

Bottom line: a great little everyday camera that is lightweight, easy and fun to use....

Yes, Sir, that's my baby! 2002-06-08
This compact camera is easy to carry around, and I just drop into my purse so that I can snap pictures anywhere. I love photography, but one of my bad habits is succumbing to the creative need of insatiable picture taking -- and then not developing the rolls of film.

I have another APS camera with 10x zoom, but it is not lightweight, and partially used rolls of films hide inside. What I love about the APS-format is the ability to take a roll of film out of one camera and insert it into another, even if some pictures are already on the film. So, I can check whether film is used or not, quite easily with the automatic film loading and advance features

APS-format also lets me set the coverage of the camera in three frame types. One is focused on center object without much background. Next is for group shots that elongate the lens area slightly more. The panoramic view is a large rectangular coverage. The self-timer function means that I also get to be in the picture. It seems that I was in very few family photos because I was always the one behind the camera; now I am a participant.

One of the pictures I took in this format is of my niece at her wedding as she danced with and kissed her new husband. It is a striking photograph because it is focused on them, and you see the floor, decorations, lighting, and can feel the dance and their movements to get a true impression of this moment.

Generally, I forget when I took a picture unless it is coded on the photo, especially since I may let the film sit in a camera too long. This excellent feature and stays on time and date.

Because I love this little Elph I give it 5 stars, and wish you great success with your photography as well.

Great camera! 2002-05-22
Light weight, good zoom, neat design. Very nice camera for [the price]. Looks similar to Canon's digital cameras (S30/S40).
