A very popular gift
2004-11-06
| We've given this gift to several of our family members and it has been a HUGE hit. Our family is spread out all over, and many of them are not computer savvy.
It has allowed my grandparents, who are thankfully still with us, to see their great-grandchild grow up on a daily basis even though they live very far away from us and are so afraid of new technology that they don't even have a VCR (they got one as a gift once, but it was "too complicated" so they gave it back. They absolutely love the Ceiva. We are able to send out photos to all of these Ceivas and when our family members wake up in the morning, they are on display. Do I wish the service was cheaper? Well sure, it is always nice to spend less money, but I think the service is worth the fee because of the amount of joy it has brought to the people we have given it to. It helps us feel very connected over the many miles. I've had to contact customer service around 6 times on behalf of the various Ceivas we've purchased. The first two times they were great and fast. Then they went through a period of being very slow. I think their sales outpaced their expectations and they weren't ready for customer service. The last two times I contacted them the response was reasonably fast, and they took care of the problem completely. As of the last time I spoke to them they were taking care of customer service in house still, which I am very glad of. I am so sick of companies who outsource. |

Great gift for grandparents
2004-10-30
| True, you must subscribe. But if you are purchasing it for a grandparent or anyone who has no computer, it is still cheaper than internet access. I look at it as an ongoing gift. I purchased one of these frames for each grandparent, and I renew them on a 3 year basis, which is cheaper. The grandparents LOVE getting up and checking the frame each day to see the new pictures I put on. Since they live 900 miles away, it is a great way for them to see the kids growing and keep up with what they are doing. They don't have computers, so I handle the controlling of the frame from mine. It is really a wonderful gift! | ||

Greatest Gift for Grandparents far Away
2004-09-08
| I bought this for my Mom and Dad two years ago, and it's the greatest gift I've ever bought them. They live in another state, and don't get to see my kids as often as they/we'd like. With the Ceiva frame, they get pictures of my brood every week - and my brother, in yet ANOTHER state, sends pictures of his family as well. My mom gets the weather every morning too. Never had a single problem with it, and she LOVES it! We bought her a very reasonably priced lifetime subscription, and now there is no additional fees, ever. It's like Tivo, gang - you pay for the service. Their website lets us send not just pictures, but notes and messages too. You can even edit your pictures for color/brightness/contrast and size on the Ceiva website. | ||

Great product, until it breaks. Then kiss it good-bye!
2004-08-05
| My mother who is completely non-technical loved this product for being able to view my digital pictures. My parents were really enjoying it, when it just stopped working one day.
We shipped it. A week after our tracking showed it was received, we received confirmation that they received it and that it would take THREE TO FOUR WEEKS just to assess the problem. Meanwhile, the expensive subscription to the service ticks away with no compensation for their faulty product. Customer support is the #1 downfall of this product by far! |

Ceiva --The Bunny that Keeps Charging
2004-07-18
| I purchased a Ceiva about a year ago, and it works very very well. However! And this is a WARNING: After the mandatory three-month "subscription," which one has to buy in order to purchase the product, they kept charging the monthly fee to my credit-card account -- even though I signed up for three months only (the minimum), and also told them to cancel, and also had my credit card company "charge back" the improper charges. Despite all that history -- they have attempted to sneak through ANOTHER unauthorized charge ... perhaps they hope that folks simply won't notice. (...). It is shame, because the product does work well. | ||

Great gift for loved ones without internet access
2004-07-10
| This product has a very specific role. It makes the perfect gift for someone who is not very computer saavy. If the person has easy email and internet access, it makes more sense (and is much cheaper) to send pictures to them through other means. My husband and I purchased this frame for his mom. We had previously tried to give her a computer but it collected dust. Since she loves pictures of the grandkids and we live several hours away, we thought this would be a good gift. The first step--plugging it in--was simple. The frame needs to have a location with easy access to both phone and electricity, or you'll have cords all over the place. Once attached, it starts displaying the Ceiva company information, including the customer service phone number. Getting the frame to properly connect and load pictures was more involved. First, it needs to be registered at the Ceiva site (that had to happen "off-site" since my mother-in-law doesn't have a computer). The website is where you load the pictures and set the guidelines for the frame (what times to turn it on and off and what number for the frame to call to load new pictures, etc) Then you need to purchase a subscription which costs almost as much as the frame on a yearly basis. Once that's done, it's supposed to be as easy as someone pushing a button (the big one on the base of the frame) and the pictures would load. Unfortunately, it didn't work at first. Our frame took a few calls to customer service (luckily a circulating pre-loaded picture on the frame) and emails from us to correct the problem. Telephone customer service was courteous and gracious to my mother-in-law. Email customer service was slow and sometimes didn't respond directly, though they did take care of a separate problem eventually. From my mother-in-law's perspective, the solution was just pushing that big button multiple times, intermittently over the course of the day, until it finally connected. I'm not sure it was the same solution from Ceiva's point of view. Once that was resolved, EVERYTHING has worked like a dream. The frame revolves 30 different pictures. On the website, I keep everything in an album so I know which ones she's seen. My brother-in-law several states away can upload pictures onto her frame as well. We can also send captions with the pictures or special greetings on Mother's Day etc. She is absolutely thrilled, and I will probably be buying one for my grandmother (who is in a board and care home) this year. PROS: Fabulous gift for the computer-less, can be accessed (on invitation/with password) by other loved ones to load their photos, easy to plug in, seamless operation once working CONS: Expensive cost of subscription (factor it into your gift giving), took some time and customer service input to get it connected, unable to edit/crop photos on website (do it before), cost of ordering prints of photographs for the receiver (we use a different company) |

Baffled by the bad reviews
2004-07-01
| I gave my parents a Ceiva receiver over a year and a half ago. I haven't had one problem. And... Ceiva has just developed software that it distributes (for free) to make downloading pictures a breeze. I'm going to buy another one... I'd buy two or three more if I could, so that all of my family could share pictures. The price has been reasonable. It's a great gift. | ||

Didn't buy, here's why
2004-06-28
| After having considered the Ceiva frame/service given a couple months research and maybe 5-6 hours total (inc talking with a current user), these are the pros and cons in my opinion: PRO CONS Summary: I really like the idea, and talked all siblings into buying for our parents, but I can't in good conscience buy this knowing all of the cons above. I truly feel that there is a good possibility of trouble, which sounds extremely difficult to resolve at the least, and expensive at worst. -Brian U |

Great Unit
2004-06-11
| I was just down visiting an Aunt and Uncle (in their late 70's) and they LOVED it. They aren't real technical but they do use computers to get emails and stuff. They showed me how it all worked. It was real simple to send pictures if you know how to attach pictures to emails, it works very similarly. As far as receiving the photos you don't need to know anything. Someone that didn't know anything could just leave it set up on an end table. The unit does all the work and you would, without doing anything, see the new photos that were sent to you. They wanted to show me how it worked so we went in the other room, and went on the computer and to the Cieva website. After following the directions we hit the send button. We went in the other room and in a few minutes the pictures were being shown on the viewer. There might be other settings but they had it set to scroll through the pictures similarly to a screen saver. The quality of the pictures were very good. I asked them how much this cost and they had no idea, they received it as a gift. I really thought this was something very costly. I was really suprised when I got home and looked it up and found that it could be bought for the $99 dollars after rebate. There is a monthly charge for just the unit itself not to the people sending the photos. That ran about $7.50-$10 a month depending on how you plan on paying. I would definately recomend this for any person who knows nothing about computers and who may not live close enough to be able to see photos of the family easily. | ||

Terrific gift, especially for non-tech grandparents
2004-05-25
| We gave this as a gift to my 82 year old grandmother two years ago, and it's still a hit. She checks the frame for new pictures every morning when she's making her coffee; she's even gotten mad at us a couple of times for replacing pictures that we didn't know were her favorites. It's best to set it up BEFORE you send it to them so that all the recipient has to do is plug in a phone cord and let it run. Grandma's never had a problem with her unit, and we wish we could find another gift that would be so popular. | ||

A black gift -- unless you will pay and take the spam
2004-05-10
| My wife got one of these from an offspring on Mother's Day. I am sure the kid thought it sounded nice. The wife didn't get a chance to play with it, so I thought I might set it up for her. Going to the web site as the instructions indicate, the information requested was severe -- name, address, phone number, email, as well as the code off the box. The privacy policy said that they would spam you -- well ok, all it said was that you would recieve information and offers, but we know what that means. Ads on the display too, it seems from the policies. Then the price! $9.95 a month (discounted to $112 or so/year if you pay in advance) to make it work! Three month minimum to sign up and a fee to cancel. It apparently does absolutely nothing without the service fee, as it has no interfaces but the phone. Looks like if it does work, she can see the grandchild pictures on a smaller dimmer screen than usual, at least she will if the kid goes to the trouble to put them in the right place on the service web page. I will probably be forced to sign up to make the kid feel good about the gift, which will cost me a minimum of $30, and get a ton of spam. I would be happier if it gets into the trash unused. |

I love it!
2004-04-21
| This is a great product. I am sorry to hear that there are those who have had bad experiences with this product. We first bought one for my husband at work so that he can see our son all day long. The picture ended up going out on it. He was on the phone with support thinking he was going to have to send it in. There was a part that he needed, and received it within just a few days, didn't pay for a thing. We then purchased one for my in-laws who tell us, still, at least once a week how much they love it. I had emailed support because we were going to be moving and wanted to see if I could put my service on hold. They got back to me the next day and said that they can't do that but they gave me a months worth of subscribtion time. I love this product! |

Far away fun!
2004-04-15
| We got the Ceiva for my girlfriend's 70 yr old mom and she loves it. We have the frame full of photos and a backstock of pictures in the album online. Her parents live in Massachusetts and we manage their frame account from our house in Maryland. They didn't have to do anything but plug it in. The other day I sent a bunch of photos of the spring flowers blooming here in Maryland. We've invited other family members to send photos- but they haven't been sending anything. That's a little disappointing since I imagined that other senders would relieve me of some of the pressure to constantly send new photos. Well- maybe they'll get around to it. My one complaint is that the monthly service fees are high. If they were lower- I might buy another for my own mother. | ||

Not perfect but I still love them!
2004-04-12
| I have purchased three Ceiva receivers over the past several years. I bought my first Ceiva for my (now) 97 year old grandmother when we realized that she was developing Alzheimer's. I liked the fact that I could use captions to jog her memory about names and faces. As her memory faded, I was able to alter the speed of the picture rotation to accomadate her needs. She says that all the residents of her unit want one. The nursing staff must look at the Ceiva too because they know when I put on new pictures. Next I got a Ceiva for my in-laws. They don't need captions to remind them of our names, but they appreciate the postcard option where we can write longer descriptions of the events in the picture. The photos are also good as thank-you cards. We take a picture of our kids using the gift, and have them write a thank-you card in the margin. My parents seemed a little envious of my grandmother's frame. Around that time, the Ceiva 2 came out. Setup was a little more complicated. The new frames allow the recipient to delete his or her own pictures. My parents have used this function to delete pictures they don't want. Everyone else loves the Weather Channel feature, but I discovered that they didn't when they twice deleted it from their frame. My parents really like new pictures. For when I am too lazy to do this, there is a picture rotation function. I like that the new frame holds more pictures than the old one. My inlaw's frame eventually ceased to work. (That one I bought several years ago from ebay) It is difficult to trouble-shoot the frames from a distance. My inlaws brought it back to me so I could interface with tech support. I was able to find the information I needed online and customer support was responsive to my email. I have not tried to reach customer support by phone so I can't comment on the phone support problems experienced by others. These frames do not have extremely high picture quality. However they are great for recipients who are not very computer literate. When my daughter leaves for college this fall, we will probably make photo CDs with PhotoShop, add an autorun feature and let her watch high quality pictures on her computer. |

What is everyone complaining about?
2004-04-01
| I bought this item for my father, right before the birth of my son. My father is far from a technophile, but even he could figure out how to use it, and even moved it to a new state and got it set up correctly. All of his friends comment on it, and have asked how they can get one. I am not sure why people are trashing it. It isinexpensive ($150) for what it is. The monthly service charge is a little high, but besides that it is priced far below competition. I think that people are expecting something for nothing. Also he had a problem, and the frame burned out after the warranty. My father called, and was polite and explained that was given this, and he would like to continue with Ceiva, but since it burned out he can't. They had him ship the frame in, and sent him out a brand new one, even though the first was out of warranty. You know why, because he doesn't sit there and cry and complain like the rest of the people on here. I wouldn't replace your frame either... | ||

CEIVA SUCKS
2004-04-01
| I was very excited to buy the CEIVA for my mother for Christmas 2002. Since then, we have had nothing but problems. I purchased it so that she could stay in touch across the miles when we had a new baby. Too bad the CIEVA didn't work for the first 10 weeks of my baby's life and it took the company that long to get us a replacement part. Unfortunately, I let my sisters talk me into buying a second machine THIS Christmas for my father. The first machine didn't work (on Christmas Day, how disappointing!) and had to be replaced. Now, it won't let me upload pictures. Their customer service is absolutely AWFUL and I never hear from them in less than 48 hours. Since I have had these two machines, I must have asked for refunds 3 or 4 times. Mostly, I am disgusted that such a GREAT - seeming product really STINKS. Don't buy it unless you are committed to daily frustration. | ||

Never Worked & Terrible Customer Service
2004-03-26
| I bought this item in November as a holiday gift for my grandmother. It never worked. I spent hours on hold and speaking with Ceiva customer support and they could not fix the problem. I finally returned the item to Amazon for a full refund. My grandmother was confused and disappointed with all the activity surrounding her gift. To make matters worse, Ceiva continues to bill me the monthly charge for their service even though I have cancelled it. I have tried email and phone communication to no avail. I strongly recommend not purchasing this item! | ||

Keeps the family "close" though far away
2004-03-24
| OK, so I'm a techie. But my Mom is 80 years old, my wife's parents are close, and they wouldn't even think of learning to use a computer at their age. But, oh do they love the CEIVA's we gave them! Yes, I needed to set them up for them. It's not that difficult, but my Mom has me change light bulbs for her, too. At least once a week we upload pictures, and they are so delighted! It often prompts a phone call, "the pictures are wonderful!" Our family now has 4 of them (a sister and a brother, too), and they also love them. If your parents/grandparents use email, use it and bring joy to their lives by sending some pictures of your family every week. If they don't use email, get them hooked up with a CEIVA, and keep in touch with them with new pictures very quickly and easily! My Mom even had the CEIVA brought to her hospital room for her, when she was hospitalized for a week. Strongly recommend for keeping families close! | ||

Customer Support Is Totally Lacking
2004-03-22
| What a wonderful product!! Too bad their customer support is non existent. Tried twice to contact them about 3 serious problems but was put on hold for over 30 minutes each time. Frustrated in Utah!! |

Works like a charm
2004-03-18
| Worked fine for us. Had a question about sending pictures which I emailed to their customer service people. Got a response in 24 hours, which wasn't too bad. Our parents in Jacksonville get new pictures on their frame every day from us, which of course thrills them. Nice way to keep in touch. | ||
Works great for us!
2004-03-16
| When my folks moved to Florida I got them one of the ceiva 2 frames to stay in touch. It's been pretty cool as they are elderly & can see new pictures of their grandkids every morning without having to do anything. (They do not have email) Sounds like some of the folks who have been disappointed in it didn't really check it out prior to buying. We love it. It has helped our family stay in touch across the miles. |

Send some photos instead
2004-03-15
| I attended a focus group session for this product and the overwhelming sentiment in the room was, "It's fine, but I'm not going to buy one." Well, I told my wife about it and we bought one for her parents in another state. We set the thing up locally and mailed it to them. I'll be honest with you, they're not "technologically-savvy" people. It wasn't a huge surprise when we came to town three months later and the thing was still in the box. I hooked it up, but mostly for selfish reasons; I paid $199 for the thing. I got it working after buying a phone cord long enough to get the Ceiva close to a power outlet. I hung it on the wall and my mother-in-law hated it. With two twisted black cords hanging out of it, I can understand why. Although the old girl put on a happy face when shots of the grandkids came up. We came back home and never heard about the Ceiva again. That's because it's back in its box collecting dust on a shelf somewhere. While Mom hated the way the thing looked, my father-in-law managed to lock all the photos so they saw the same shots over an over for a month. After that he took it down. Costco makes digital prints for $.19 a piece and stamps are cheap. Sometimes old technology is still the best. |

Great Idea - but the Geek's views are interesting
2004-03-13
| I was a friend's home today and they had three of them running different photos in different rooms. I had not seem a Ceiva before and was very impressed until I saw the monthly usage fee. I would have to agree with the geek's view, and will wait until other providers have it and it can be accessed via the internet. | ||

Piece of Junk
2004-03-13
| The Ceiva frame would be a great product if the year was 1994! HELLO!!!, the "technology" involved is trivial and it is hard to believe that with so many implementation flaws and limitations that Ceiva will be around much longer or, much less, will survive a competitor entering the market with a product based on 2004 technology. I was very disappointed when I first fired up my frame. But hats off to Ceiva's sneaky marketing department that regularly puts five star reviews into Amazon's customer review database! The latest one ("A very popular gift, March 1, 2004" by "A customer from California") had me laughing because it borrowed so much copy from their advertisements & website. Maybe they have a non-subscription version with a decent-sized quality screen ready to build and in an effort to maximize short term profits they are just waiting until they are forced by the market to provide it. If so, hats off again to their sneaky marketing department. (Of course this is a losing long term strategy, as countless technology companies have proven over and over, but hey, marketing must remain tactical to survive within a greedy company.) Oh well! Maybe next year. I will enjoy watching Sony (or someone else) eat Ceiva's lunch. |

not so good
2004-03-08
| I was disappointed in this product - I bought it as a gift for my parents, they can only see it if they are looking right at it - the picture quality is good, but only if you are staring at it - I wanted them to see it from the whole room, and be able to see their grandkids all day long - the set up was easy, but it was not worth the money - I was confused by the monthly service fee and am wishing I bought them a bigger computer monitor instead. | ||

Great Idea - Bad quality
2004-03-04
| I bought this for my Mom. Broke after warranty period, bought second one at reduced rate. Broke again due to power supply, Broke again - pictures would not download. Cieva recommended another power supply. New power supply faulty. This product is a great idea, but due to poor quality it is a MONEY PIT. |

Just a geeks observation
2004-02-11
| Notice that they made this thing connect to a local number, which like in the old time we used to connect to a BBS instead of the internet... this means that the buyer of this thing will have to pay them and it will only work with Ceiva network. however, I would wait a bit... it will not take long before such digital frame will be able to connect and do the exact same thing using.. (drums please...) the Internet O-: what an amazing thing ha? and not only that, it will also be adjustable so you can use any site and not just the site of the company that made the digital frame... They should make money for selling the frame, I see no reason to pay a monthly fee to get my pic downloaded to the frame. do you pay to OPhoto, yahoo, clubPhoto etc' to store your pictures? didn't think so, it is not that hard to make this frame download pictures from such a site instead of Ceiva network. This is a short living product. mark my words. |

Awesome Product!

| I bought this for my Mom for Christmas and she LOVES! I live in Ca and she and the rest of my family lives in VA. Now she can see me everday! I take lots of pictures and keep her connected to my life this way! Its a great gift for families who are spread out. I had some questions about the service, setup etc and the customer support department was so helpful and knowledgeable. I really felt like they were on top of things! I think anyone who wants to stay connected to their families should go purchase one! |

CEIVA Rocks!!
2004-01-27
| My wife and I just bought one of these for my parents, who live in Chicago (we are in California). When our twin boys were born earlier this month, we started sending daily pictures of the boys to my parents' frame. They love it! My folks aren't very technologically-saavy, so the fact that they can just wake up and look at new photographs is fantastic. My father hasn't been able to visit yet, so his entire experience of his grandsons has been through his CEIVA. I've read some of the reviews here, and I have to disagree with some of them. I have always found CEIVA's Customer Care team extremely helpful. Granted, you might have a significant hold time if you decide to call in the day after Christmas =-), but then again, all of their on-hold messages tell you this, and recommend that you contact them via email. I've usually gotten an email response from them within their stated turnaround times of 48 to 72 hours. Keep in mind that online review sites like this one are typically where disgruntled customers go to vent their steam, so the fact that CEIVA's reviews are still overwhelmingly positive really testify to the strength of their product and their support staff. I mean, look at some of the idiotic comments some of the other posters have made-- "Gee, it doesn't work in Canada and I bought one without looking that up first. Man, am I pissed!" Some people will never be satisfied. How many other companies: * offer an unconditional 30-day money-back guarantee? If I sound like a cheerleader, it's because we have had such a fantastic experience of this product. The 30-day return policy makes it a completely no-risk purchase, and once you try it out for a day, you will never want to take it back. Before purchasing the CEIVA frame, I checked out some of the other models out there. CEIVA is the only digital photo frame that allows you to share pictures over the 'Net. The next most-popular model is the Pacific Digital photo frame. I tried contacting their Customer Care team to see what their response time was. Not only was their "Chat with an Operator Now" link pointing to a dead web page, but when I called their support number, I was only able to leave a voice mail. I got a call back later that day (about 8 hours later, in fact), and spoke with a young man who seemed to know nothing at all about their products. (Here is the link to that other company, by the way: http://www.pacificdigitalcorp.com/index.htm) It's a joke... talk about a lack of Customer Service! If you want to check out the CEIVA, it's easy-- try one under the 30-day return policy and see if you like it. And shoot their Customer Care team an email and see how long it takes them to get back to you. My mom and dad love waking up each day to look at new pictures of their grandchildren, and I couldn't be happier with my choice of Christmas gift. |

Great Product, but please read the information on it.
2004-01-15
| This has to be one of the best products that I have ever bought. I gave one to both sets of grandparents this year for christmas. They both love it. I have had no problems at all and I am very happy that I made the initial investment in this product. Please understand that this product runs about $150, and it also requires a subscription. They do not try to hide this from you. You also have the option to purchase an extended warranty (which I recommend doing). Other than that this is great. You can store your pictures on their website and send them as you need to. My grandparents look forward to waking up every morning to see their new pictures. I can't say enough about it. | ||

The best way to stay in touch!
2004-01-15
| This experience has been one of the best ever! CEIVA has done a fantastic job with their new Ceiva digital photo receiver. If you have family on the other side of the country, and want to stay connected to their lives like never before........get this product! You definitly do NOT need to be a technical person to use this thing. Once your Ceiva Receiver is delivered, you'll have to register it to the Ceiva Network. I actually signed up for my free account, and then just registered it once the product arrived. By the way, I learned later that everyone needs an account at Ceiva, so you may as well set up your member account while you're waiting. Registering the Receiver is quick. You just need the 12 digit serial number and information like the phone number it's going to dial from. This was the same as my Earthlink account (selecting local numbers to dial into the provider). You have to select a subscription plan to receive pictures, but they have some great rates ($7.95 a month). Anyway, once it's registered you can just use it, or get as fancy as you like. They have some great features that allow you to have the lcd screen turn on and off automatically, picture rotation times, and more. You also have the ability to put text messages on your pictures, customizing them with whatever greeting you want. You can even turn a picture into a digital postcard. Sending pictures to the Receiver you have the option to send one,or up to 30 at a time. All the web stuff is pretty cool, but nothing compares with the emotional impact of seeing the kids or other great friends and family every morning. Ceiva has done a really amazing job in allowing people to stay connected like never before in this tech world we live in, yet you don't have to be a tech head to use it. Very cool! |

What a great invention!

| Our family shops regularly at Amazon, but this is the first time we are taking the time to submit a product review. That's because no product has ever made such a profound impact in our lives as the Ceiva Digital Photo Receiver. We have had our Ceiva Receiver for over a year now and have thoroughly enjoyed receiving pictures from our distant family, and friends that have moved away over the years. It may sound silly to write about the emotional impact an electronic item has had in our lives, but it's true. This year we gave two new Ceiva 2 Receivers as gifts, and they have been a huge hit again! Ceiva has really given us the ability to stay close and involved in the lives of people that really matter to us. I've read other reviews here about difficulty with set up and connection costs, but to be honest, it has been pretty easy to get a handle on using the product and website, and the costs are very minimal, especially given the emotional value to our family. Our cell phone costs 5X that of our Ceiva and is nowhere the value to us. We're looking forward to seeing what's next from Ceiva......and seeing pictures from our family and friends for a long time. Thanks for making such a wonderful product! | ||

Makes the world a small place

| Our family puchased two Ceiva Receivers this Christmas holiday. One was for grandparents who rarely see our family here in the States, not to mention distant family in Europe. Setting up the ceiva product was easy, as was sending pictures to both Receivers. The real joy of this amazing product is when we began receiving pictures from our family overseas. Even our younger family members are fortunate if they can make it to Europe once a year, but now we are all able to receive pictures everyday! Not only has Ceiva brought family closer together here in the U.S. but overseas as well. Thank you for a wonderful product! | ||

STRUGGLING COMPANY - POOR EXECUTION
2004-01-14
| If you are overseas or in Canada, forget it. There is NO way to make the Cieva frame call from anywhere other than the US. In fact Cieva has purposely re-designed their web site to make it impossible to call from overseas; despite thousands of requests from people willing to pay the toll fee. If you are in the US the setup is not grandma friendly, complicated, and can only be done by a person with a computer and patience. It is not a product for most Grandma and Grandpa's. And that is the exact market they are catering to. The price is low, and that explains the abysmal image quality. But the yearly service fee not so cheap, and will run you close to $100. (If you plan to buy more than one frame, you better check to see if that fee is $100 per frame. Each frame has a serial number that you have to enter when you sign up with Cieva.) Support, I spent days calling a busy tone. Finally when they did pick up I had to wait over 20 minutes. Once I got them on the line they were fine, but all they had to do was tell me I couldn't dial in from overseas. It seems their support is in one location, and the executive offices in another, but I was told there was no way to call the executive offices because they did not have a phone (of course I don't believe that malarkey). Ceiva is obviously a small struggling company in a market that will soon offer a wide variety of superior offerings. I had a multiple negative Ceiva experience and will not be coming back to Ceiva. |

Ceiva is fine. Other new products look also cool
2004-01-10

| Ceiva is a great concept, and I believe was the first one of that kind in the market. Quality is still poor, and price expensive though. You can find some other products (some also sold on Amazon) dedicated to non-computer users or users experiencing troubles to download and display emails and/or pics, such as the MailStation (provided by Earthlink), the Pacific Digital Memory Frame (provided by Pacific Digital), the MailBug (provided from Lander) and FamilyMail (free beta version on their site). |

System overload
2004-01-04
| A great idea, when it works. We repeatedly have difficulty getting on the Ceiva server to upload photos; my impression is that they don't have enough capacity (or reliability) to meet the user demand for services. Unless they upgrade, this should dissuade people who don't want to spend their day waiting for the Ceiva homepage to load. | ||

Perfect for us
2004-01-04
| Over the last four months, we've purchased five Ceiva receivers as birthday and Christmas gifts for family. Initially, we were nervous about purchasing even one after having read mixed reviews such as those posted here, but our personal experience with the product and company has been wholly positive. Eight days before Christmas, we received our last receiver, only to find that several pixels on the frame face were orange. An email to the customer service brought a reply within 24 hours and within four days, I had a new receiver...even before the one I was returning had arrived back to Ceiva. The set up and uploading of pictures is not difficult if you have some comfort working with computers, which is precisely why we did it all ahead of time (and so that when the gifts were opened, they could be plugged in automatically with photos ready, rather than having to wait for the daily dial in). Now a few days past Christmas, all the receivers are out and our family loves them. No one has had any difficulty with the at home set up (plug in two cords, press a button) and they all agree that continued subscriptions to the site will make great Father's Day/Mother's Day/Birthday gifts in the future. |

Not-Ready-for-Prime-Time Product with N-R-f-P-T Customer Svc
2003-12-30
| This is a prime example of the risks of buying new technology site-unseen from an company not heard of. This was ordered for my mother so that she could receive family photos from relatives the world over. Problems: Think I'm harsh? Well, read some of the more critical reviews posted previously - they will confirm our experience. |

Why doesn't everyone know about this product? It's Great!
2003-12-30
| This is an excellent product, and met if not exceeded our expectations. My wife and I are expecting our first child in February, and my parents are back in Illinois (we're in Pennsylvania). They do not have a computer and are not too up on technology. This seemed like the perfect product to keep them in touch with us. After our first week with it, it appears it will do so quite admirably. I had the product shipped to our house, where we opened it up, registered it, and got it working, all within 30 minutes (I had previously been on Ceiva's website, so I did know my way around). We put it back in the box, wrapped it, and my parents opened it when they came to visit for the holidays. I took a picture of them opening the box, and by the time we got it all set back up again, I had uploaded it to Ceiva, the frame downloaded it, and it became part of the slideshow, all within 10 minutes. My parents loved it, and are really looking forward to all the pictures we'll be sending them. They have since gone back home to Illinois, where they had no trouble getting it hooked back up by themselves (it really is just a matter of plugging it into a socket and a phone line). It's downloaded pictures just fine after they set it up (we did have to change the call-in number before we unhooked it in Pittsburgh, but that's all explained in the manual). To address a few concerns other people have raised in their reviews: 1) Yes, it is a subscription service, but for my parents who don't have or need a computer, it's great. Plus, for my wife's parents, who do have a computer, we can send them email through our account on Ceiva and they can view the pictures we send to my parent's frame--this is free; 2) The screen quality is fine--serviceable, but not great; being familiar with passive LCD screens, I'm actually somewhat impressed by its brightness; 3) for the Weather channel, it apparently doesn't know some zip codes--if you put in one it doesn't know, it says it has added the channel (it doesn't register an error), but it doesn't actually add it to the Photos to Send page--you'll need to find another town close by; 4) this one seems like a bug to me (and a reviewer two or three reviews down apparently found it)--you can set the interval for how long each picture appears in the slide show--however, it appears that this number is stored with each picture, as opposed to being a global setting for the frame; so, the new interval (the default is 5 s, we changed it to 15 s), will only apply to pictures that you add after you change the interval). The last two things are small bummers, but really in no way diminish the usefulness of the device. So in short, this product is great and I would highly recommend it to anyone, particularly to someone in our situation. |

Great product

| I love my Ceiva. I am compulsive about sending myself new pictures, then sending them on to my Dad's Ceiva. What an ingenious product - rotating photos on your desk! My co-workers love to see what's new on the frame. They even use my Ceiva to check the weather! | ||

Quite Dissappointed
2003-12-21
| I purchased a Ceiva for my girlfriend, and was horribly disappointed when I used it. The "springloaded" tray creaks like a 50 cent childs toy when it opens and closes. The field of view for the frame is quite minimal. The contrast on the frame itself is poor as well. The constructioin itself is quite "cheap", and very lightweight. Overall i would give this product a 2 out of 10. Unfortunately I was unable to view the product before I purchased it. (The store said that since it required a subscription it would not open the box). Now I am stuck with a hoorid product that not only did i pay $150 for but now i have to pay a monthly fee to make it even remotely useful. On the good side, the channel feature is nice, but certainly not worth the money. Thanks, well for ripping me off and teaching me a lesson I guess. Jason Jongalt2626@comcast.net |

Do not put purchased reviews on your site please.
2003-12-18
| Well I read some reviews on your site regarding the receiver and unfortunately bought one. To my utter surprise there is no way you can put your own picutres on your own receiver, except for the company's web site which you have to pay for.So you end up being a milking cow for the company. So your reviews were not helpful at. I can't believe people like paying everymonth for something that they already purchased. I am not saying that being able to send pictures directly to the receiver is a bad thing, but not having an option seems a weird thing to do. | ||

Buyer Beware
2003-12-17
| In theory, this should be a great product. Here's a fairly reasonably priced Photo Display, at least for what's been around in the past few years. If someone doesn't have a computer, they can still use it..pretty much just plug it in and wait for the pictures to come. I bought one for my 72 year old mother despite the mixed reviews online. It seemed that with the new model, some of the problems had been worked out and it was worth a shot. I figured I would beat the Christmas rush and get everything set up at my house before I wrapped the present. We could just plug it in and not worry about the tech support issues on Christmas Day. Well here I am, about 12 hours after I first opened the box and I'm still waiting to finish downloading my photos and channels. Here's the process: 1) I created an account and registered the receiver. I purchased the extended warranty and got the one year subscription. This was an easy set up and there were no problems here. 2) I selected 17 pictures from my computer and uploaded them to the site. Again, no real problems here. I used a program to reduce the size of the photos to less than 100k and reduced them to 640x480 pictures because of the info I read here. 3) I attempted to dial in to a local number and download the pictures. Here is where the trouble started. I had to dial in at least a dozen different times because of connection failures. I kept getting messages like "congestion" and "general failure". These messages have appeared over these past 12 hours. I had to unplug and restart the Receiver twice because it froze after attempting downloading. 4) I finally got the pictures downloaded and then attempted to add the Weather Channel, and a couple of picture channels to the Receiver. I went through the procedure to add the Weather Channel on the Website. It told me it was added, but never showed up in my "pictures to download" folder. I emailed customer support and got an automated reply back. I tried entering a different Zip Code and amazingly it worked for Minneapolis, but not St. Paul. 5) I then attempted to delete pictures through the website. I went through the ones I wanted to trash and followed the procedures as directed. The pictures were never deleted, so the channels did not download to the Receiver, because there wasn't space. I finally selected the pictures to delete on the Receiver itself and tried to download the channels again. I was finally able to download the Channels after several more failed attempts to connect to the network. 6) There are also ways on the website to change the duration of display preferences on the receiver. So far the changes I made in these preferences have not made it on any of the downloads. My pictures are stuck on 5 second display. I'm still working on trying to resolve this issue. This might work out OK if you are willing to take the time to work through all these problems. If you are giving this to an elderly person or someone who has little or no computer experience, think again. You will probably have to provide tech support for them for this to work properly. I hate to think about all the people trying to get pictures on this thing Christmas Eve or Day. The display itself seems to be adequate. The pictures are fairly bright and can easily be seen, even in a well lit room. The angle of viewing is OK, but not great. It's kind of like the old passive matrix computer screens...well, better than that, but not up to the quality of current LCD technology. Improvements that I would like to see are viewing preferences on the display and a way to directly transfer pictures to the display without going through Ceiva. I realize this ruins their "razorblade" scenario for making money through annual subscriptions, but there has to be a better way of accomplishing transfer of the photos. |

Memories of good times past
2003-12-16
| We've had a Ceiva for about 6 months, and have loved it - my kids get up every morning and run in to see if we have new pictures, and to see the daily Disney scene. About a month ago, we had occasion to use our Ceiva in another way. My brother-on-law passed away suddenly, and we had a large memorial service. Along with the sadness, we wanted to have a way to think about some of the happy times in his life -- our Ceiva came to mind. We loaded the Ceiva with pictures from his life -- from childhood up thru the past few weeks - and had it on the table outside the chapel as his friends and family came in. People just stood in front of the Ceiva and oohed and aahed and occasionally, cried -- it was an incredible way to share our memories and talk about good times we'd had with him. Thank you-- this is a great product. |

Excellent Gift - Great for anyone!
2003-12-12
| I recently purchased a Ceivea from the Discovery Store. This was a gift for my husbands Aunt and Uncle. They live close to us for 6 months and go to Florida for 6 months out of the year. I purchased the Ceiva because I never have time to get pictures developed and mail out to them. They loved it! I set-up the Ceiva---coming from a product development background the directions were dummy proof, easy to follow and set-up. I highly recommend this product! It's easy because I control the dial in number, can invite buddies to add pictures and everyone is happy! EXCELLENT GIFT for Gramma and Grampa, Aunts & Uncles and anyone that lives far away that you want to share pictures with! Now they enjoy precious moments and Cevia offers an extra benefit---If they want a printed picture, all they have to do is hit a button and Ceiva will print the picture and send it to them! | ||

Beware
2003-12-12
| I made the mistake of getting my mother and mother in-law Ceivas last year for Christmas. Both have failed within the first year of use. Ceiva's customer service is difficult to get ahold of (never respond to e-mails, 20min hold on phone) and inflexible on their policies. I made the further mistake of buying a new receiver to replace the one that failed after the warranty expired and found out that the 3 year prepaid subscription was not transferable to the new receiver unless I paid an additional year. Now I have a subscription through December of 2006 for a product I expect will fail within six months. When it works the product is simple to use but the picture quality is substantially below what any computer LCD screen provides. |

Improving - Ceiva Review
2003-12-10
| Summary: Concept: Awesome. I had an ailing Grandfather in an assisted living home who was able to enjoy memories (I utilized the album function to store lots of photos from his past) by watching his frame and never having to touch it. Customer Service: Average. They attempt to do the right thing, but their lack of financial support for their poor technology (basically if the frame stops working after 30 days it isn't their problem anymore) is very upsetting. Technology: Poor hardware. Even the 'Ceiva II' I have now purchased suffered severe rebooting issues before finally stabilizing. And I highly recommend the extended warranty - though it is disgusting that you actually are buying for one year of protection...you aren't _extending_ any warranty they provide. Cost: High (too high). Now that they've come up with the Ceiva II the subscription rate is $90 a year. Pretty steep. Be sure that if you have technological problems with your frame that you demand the addition of weeks/months added to that subscription. My History: I bought my first Ceiva Digital Photo Receiver (the 'Ceiva I' as it is now referred to) in October of 2001. Actually I purchased two. Right out of the box one worked (after a bunch of hassle forcing it to dial-in repeatedly) and one did not. Ceiva sent me a refurbished frame in replacement of the one that didn't work (though this refurbished frame worked great, it was disconcerting that they didn't send me a brand new frame). Basically, Caveat Emptor. The concept is great, but there are hassles in your future with the technology, and additional $$ to be paid out. |

It's all in the connection
2003-12-10
| I've always been into the coolest and latest gadgets to hit the market. Lately I've slowed down on my purchases as the world of electronics seems to change daily, but last year I happen to run across Ceiva and thought the idea was pretty cool and fun to use. I gave it as a Christmas gift to my brother (who just recently was married) as he now lives over 1,000 miles away from home, and my grandmother whom I see once or twice a year due to distance as well. Never have I ever given a gift to anyone that has meant as much as this Ceiva product. It has kept us close as brothers and as a family. It's really hard to explain how much this product has changed our lives, but it has. I purchased a Ceiva for myself sometime in August, and have enjoyed the same wonderfully emotional experience. This year Ceiva has a new version of their product out (Ceiva 2) which as a family we have decided to give as Christmas gifts to several family memebers and friends! It will be so amazing to stay in touch with the lives of our own family and lifelong friends. Other reviews on the Internet talk down the fact that Ceiva requires a subscription, but I have to tell you, it's the connection that makes this product as my grandmother would say "a magic show". I looked at other products (the most recent one made by a company called Pacific Digital) which I wasn't impressed with at all. It doesn't require a subscription, but I can tell you the quality of the product is very poor, and in the end I wasn't interested in looking at my own digital photo's at home. Ceiva allows me to share my digital pictures with my family in a way I was never able to before. Note that someone in the family does need to have a computer to send pictures to the Ceiva Receivers in-box, but it really is fast and easy to do. The endless "thank you's" from my family has been worth every penny! |

Brings Family Together
2003-12-09
| First, a little about the Ceiva. And then, a little about just how cool it really is. The Ceiva is basically just a screen that shows digital pictures. I bought some last year that show 20 pictures at any one time. The new ones (I just got 3 more!) do 30 -- plus some very cool new stuff too. See... what makes this so awesome, is that the Ceiva plugs into a phone line, and then dials out every night and grabs new pictures from your account -- you could get 30 new pictures every day. There's a cost for this service, but for the value, it's really quite reasonable. They have monthly and yearly plans, or if you're buying it as a gift, you can get a gift certificate good for a year of service. This new Ceiva does some cool things the first one didn't. First, I can delete pictures out of my slideshow right from the unit. Before, I had to do it on Ceiva's website and then have the Ceiva dial in again. Also, if I like a particular picture, I can just hit a button, and it'll order prints of that picture for me -- and they'll show up in the mail in a couple of days! We bought 5 Ceiva's last year. Each one of them has turned out to be amazing, in increasing our ability to share our lives, our joy, and our pain with our family. My adopted daughter's great grandmother had one. Even though she was bedridden, she was able to keep up with Erin, and see pictures of our family, as well as her other grandchildren's families, as we sent her new pictures every day. When my own grandmother passed away this year, we took pictures of all the friends and family who came for the funeral, and then sent some of those out to my sister, who couldn't make it. She still thanks me for that. My wife's father likes the fact that the weather channel is available on the ceiva -- every night he gets a 3-day forecast uploaded, which he can see at a glance when he gets up in the morning. They're out in Missouri, and they call us every couple of days asking for new pictures. I never thought such a little thing could have such a profound effect on our family, but it has. I can't recommend the ceiva high enough. |

So much more than a digital frame
2003-12-07
| We looked at many digital frames and what won us over wasn't screen quality, picture capacity or computer interfaces. It simply was that only the Ceiva allowed our family to stay in touch from Rhode Island, Florida and Los Angeles. With Mom and Dad retired in Naples, FL, this feature allowed my 3 sisters and I to send them pictures of our families every day. All our parents have to do is wake-up and view. Mom almost cried when she saw my sister's sonogram...pretty cool. | ||

Awesome Gift, My Grandfather loves it!
2003-12-03
| This is really a neat gift. My grandfather lives in another state (Oregon) and rarely sees his kids and grandkids. Now he is getting new pictures from all kids & grandkids every night with his Ceiva Digital Photo Receiver. I mailed him one and all he had to do was plug it into an electrical outlet and plug in the phone line and press a button. Now every night it automatically calls the Ceiva website and retreives any pictures we kids have sent. He also gets new weather forecasts with his new pictures every morning when he wakes up. An incredibly easy way to keep families in touch. One note: I was worried at first because dad does not have a compuer & "that internet thing", but thankfully with Ceiva they are not needed! | ||

Perfect for Nursing Home
2003-12-02
| I bought this for my paralyzed cousin that is in a nursing home. She has had it about 6 months and it is great. It does a slideshow through 20 pictures and I change the pictures out about every week or so. I subscribed her to some of the channels they have available with the subscription (so I wouldn't have to take so many pictures...) and she get the current weather forecast, her horoscope and a flower a day. It is perfect. |

The best gift for long distance girlfriend ever!
2003-11-29
| I bought Cevia for my girlfriend when it first came out and we lived 3 hours apart. She loved waking up every morning and checking what I had sent. A year later we were married. Now we both load pictures on and surprise each other. It's so easy, your grandmother could use it. And she'll love it too. | ||

Definitely worth the money to stay in touch
2003-11-24
| I got this picture frame for my grandparents, who are both in their eighties, to see pictures of our new son. They both love it, and that's really all that matters to me. We live in Chicago, and they live in New Jersey, so we don't see each other very often. I took advantage of a trip for Poppa's 85th birthday to buy the receiver, take it out there and set it up for them. The setup is a snap. They've moved it once already (from room to room) and had no problems setting it back up. (Note that if you set it up in one area code and move it, you'll have to do some configuration changes to get it to dial the new number. I made sure that I set it up for their area code before I took it out there.) The picture quality is very good, but the viewing angle isn't so great. You pretty much have to view the frame from directly in front of it. This newer model can hold 30 images, and I usually upload 640x480 JPEGs that are around 50KB each. It connects every night around midnight or so via their phone line and a local number I picked. A little green LED on the front panel blinks to let them know that new pictures are waiting. The spring-loaded plastic panel on the front feels cheaply made and on my unit had a weak spring that didn't push it out all the way. But you only need it to manually advance through the pictures, order prints, or delete an image. You can use the Ceiva without pulling out the panel. Back in Chicago, I just upload images to the festive-looking ceiva.com website (they change the site icon theme for every season) and they sit in the inbox waiting for the overnight connection. Ceiva has a nice upload tool that can upload single or multiple (up to 30) images. It can also customize them by adding captions, background color, etc. However, it doesn't let you see a preview of the changes before you upload the image. The upload tool can also email the pictures to friends who don't have a Ceiva. But it doesn't work like you might think: instead of sending them a message with the images as attachments they get an email with a link that takes them to a "crippled" slideshow on Ceiva's website. Still, it's better than no email at all. The Ceiva website also lets you invite family members and friends to upload pictures to the unit via your account. Since I have a large family that lives all over the world, this is a nice feature to have. The accounts are limited, though. They can only use their account to upload pictures. They don't have access to my master album, which would be nice so they could see my pictures and order prints. As a word of caution, from things I've seen posted around the Internet: if you want the best experience with this product buy it before or after Christmas, which is when everyone buys it and swamps Ceiva's website and tech support staff. I've emailed a question to tech support and received a response within a day, which isn't so bad. Two other minor quibbles I have with the product: But all in all, this is a good product, and the thank you's that I keep getting from my grandparents consistently affirm that. |

Perfect for everyone
2003-11-16
| I had seen one of these on a freinds desk, and she raved about it. I thought the prices were high, until I saw a refurbished unit on ebay, so I gaave it a shot. Man is this thing neat. I liked it so much I bought two more for my parents and Inlaws, and they love it too. They get daily updates of the grandkids each morning, and order prints directly online of the shots they like. Limited computer skills are needed to set up initially, and none there after I would definatily recomend this for anyone with extended distance families. |
