SD14 Sigma Foveon w/ kit lens
2008-08-19

I'm a professional photographer with over 30 years of experience.
I've been watching Sigma and their unique Foveon chip for quite a few years.
I have known that the Sigma cameras have had various technical problems- the first ones in particular had some pretty sub-standard viewfinders.
I researched their current best effort- the SD14 and it seemed that
most of the bugs had been worked out of the camera.
I found out what the weaknesses of the camera were- that it does not shoot well at high iso speeds. I purchased the camera as a hobby camera- and took it to an airshow to try it out. I set the camera to the optional ISO 50 setting and quickly found that shooting in contrasty mixed light the camera dug into the shadows and kept the detail in the highlights.
The RAW files open in LightRoom to only 13MB- but it is the most detailed
13MB file you will ever see. Forget all the math and myths about the resolution of this camera- its 4.x MP x three layers translates to about the same resolution of my Canon 40D which is 10MP with a typical RGGB Bayer pattern screen.
Improvements to the SD14- support for converting the RAW files in LightRoom and the current version of Adobe Camera RAW- ( note previews do not show during import of these SD14 RAW files)
also note - compared to other RAW files- the SD14 files can handle a LOT of sharpening in Lightroom. Unlike regular RAW files- high degrees of sharpening settings make the SD14 files appear sharper- but there is no artifacting or haloing. Also note- the RAW file structure is radically different because of the nature of the Foveon chip - so note that
some of the LighRoom adjustment functions seem a little slower to update the full screen previews.
The SD14 also records jpegs files- earlier cameras did not offer this- they only shot RAW.
Excellent high eyepoint viewfinder. Unique removable IR blocking filter.
Placing a red filter over the lens with this blocking filter removed allows you to shoot in InfraRed. Note- set camera to Tungsten Bal when shooting IR.
The camera mirror can be locked up with the battery- no power adapter needed. Color is like nothing else in this price range. Even the very cheap kit lens that came with the camera was surprisingly sharp.
Battery life is not great-( 200-250 in RAW shots?) but extra batteries are cheap. Shooting many images on rapid sucession can cause an occasional image to be corrupt on the card- but a new firmware update has been reported to take care of this. Focus seems quick and fine in adequate light. Shutter has a lovely sound and feel. Body construction seems very good.
Menus are straightforward and easily configured.
As a daylight camera- it is a fabulous camera. I have no experience in mixed lighting- or using flash. I bought the camera to play to its unique strengths and I have been quite impressed.

Well worth it

| The only real downfall of this package is that it actually comes with a spare battery for a minolta camera. So obviously it doesn't fit |
