Great backpacking tripod

I bought this tripod with 2 intentions in mind.
1. To have a portable light weight tripod to take hiking and backpacking with me.
2. To have a tripod to go along with the camera I purchased for use at my wedding.
As far as number one goes. This tripod does very well. It is very compact and light weight. It fits perfectly in the side straps of my small camera backpack (Caselogic TBC-307 SLR Camera Backpack). I barely even notice I am carrying it. My only two gripes are that it does not have a quick release bolt as advertised. Though the twisting one is easy to use. And that when panning horizontally it isn't 100% smooth. Vertically it is perfect, but left and right it jumps just a little.
Now number two. I will now for sure in 2 days during the rehearsal, but I suspect that I will need to elevate the tripod just a little to avoid the looking up appearance in the wedding video. My camera (Panasonic GH1) does have a fully articulating screen so the height of the tripod works just fine in most any other situation. With out an articulating screen you may find the height a little short.
Summation
For the money I don't think you will find a better compact tripod, but there are a couple things they could do to improve on it. |

Well made well designed, lightweight, specs on Amazon are wrong

Bought this after reviewing other tripods including the SLIK Compact-xl.
It is lightweight, but DOES NOT feel flimsy. Everything about this tripod has a solid firm feel to it.
The locking mechanism is cam-lock like heavier tripods (the reason I chose this over the SLIK Compact-XL which has a twist lock mechanism that I have found tends to fail over time).
The technical specs on Amazon ARE incorrect. This tripod DOES NOT HAVE a quick release as the specs say it does.
I was a bit put off by that fact because that was somewhat important to me. Given I am leaving in less than a week it doesn't give me enough time to find are replacement that does. However, I will say the large knurled knob for the locking screw mechanism is very smooth and easy to operate so it doesn't take too long to lock the camera/camcorder in place. Typically the screw mechanism requires you to have small fingers and be very dexterous, or use some kind of coin to lock the camera in place (hence the advantage of having a quick release/lock)
No sharp corners anywhere, which is great so you don't have to worry about tearing a hole in your rain jacket(or anything else for that matter) because it is packed in the backpack along with your tripod!
Does NOT have a crank handle to raise the platform, which I LOVE. Nobody I know adjusts the camera height so precisely as to require a crank handle ! A quick twist lock mechanism holds the platform in place, AND there is some kind internal limit pin to prevent you from pulling the platform shaft right out of the guide tube (nice touch when you are in a hurry)
Full extended the height with the platform raised is a complete 39.5" to the platform so even for a tall person it is not a lot of bending over.
Comes with a nylon carrying case which is convenient when just going for a short hike/walk.
Would have given it 5 stars but for the fact that it does not have the quick release. |

Perfect tripod that suits my needs..

I am new to advanced photography and trying to learn some tricks of the trade. 1st thing I found out was that I would need a tripod to keep my camera stable. But, at the same time I am too lazy to carry lots of stuff with me everytime I go out and so I wanted a tripod which is compact, light-weight and strong enough to give stability. I looked at several options and then came across sony VCT-R100. It turned out to be the perfect combo of all the requirements I had.
It is very compact & light-weight and easily fits in a back-pack. In general, compact tripods turn out to be shaky coz of the inferior material used to keep it light-weight. But, this one has no such problems.. it's strong enuff and holds my camera very well (i own a canon S3-IS). And then, the finishing is awesome, after all its a Sony product.
All in all.. a perfect compact tripod with good finishing! |
