This is not a small tripod head.
The base is about 2.5" in diameter and the head is probably 4.5" high.
The movement is very smooth though and the quality looks ok.
I retured it the following day because I'm looking for a smaller head, so I haven't actually used it, but the reason I gave it 4 and not 5 is because of the plastic construction. Expecially the BIG plastic quick release plate looked a bit flimsy to me.
I ordered from MZ Photo, and I received it in 3 days! Good service. |

Very good video pan head for the price

This product was purchased for use with a Canon HV-20 camcorder. This type of camera tripod pan head has a fluidized damping mechanism built in to provide a smooth, even motion when hand-panning a video (or film) movie camera. Regular tripod heads without fluid damping are much harder to control, and will usually produce pans with noticeable "jerkiness" and undesireable changes in panning rate. This is a two-axis pan head, and it is fluidized in both axes. NOTE: being a two-axis head means that you must manually level your tripod; the pan head itself rotates only in horizontal and vertical, it does not adjust for sideways tilt. This panhead will mount with either a 1/4" or 1/2" mount screw: the mounting thread on the bottom of the head appears to be 1/2-13, with a 1/4-20 insert for use on regular photo tripods. There are angle indexing marks every 10ยบ around the horizontal and vertical axis circles. These markings are white-on-black and therefore easy to see even in low light conditions.
BUILD QUALITY: Better than I might have expected at this price point. The Velbon PH-368 feels solidly made of heavy (thick) molded plastic. It feels like it could easily survive an accidental drop onto a hard surface from shoulder height. It comes with a quick-release camera mount plate that's very large and surfaced with cork: it's big enough to support a much larger camera than my my diminutive HV-20. There is a leveling bubble built in, so you don't have to have one on the tripod. The primary control handle is plastic, but offers a good grip and it can be adjusted for angle. The locking and tension adjustment knobs are large and well made, and are easy to grip. NOTE: The damping fluid in the pan head feels like a relatively thick oil; this oil might become quite viscous in very cold weather, effectively "locking" the panhead completely.
SUMMARY: This product feels to be VERY well made for a photographic accessory that cost only $35. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to shoot video with very smooth panning transitions. |
