Additional probes are available.

You have to treat this probe carefully, as you do with any digital probe. The internal wires are fine and will break if flexed repeatedly, especially at the probe to cable transition point. With reasonable care we got 4 years of use from one probe.
After probe died it took some searching to find the probes. They available from Maverick in New Jersey. Two probes for $20, including shipping. Go to http://www.maverickhousewares.com/parts_and_service.htm and down to the PDF form. You want the ET-8 STD PROBE(2-Pak), for $20 as of 12/2008. You will get 2 probes sent by mail. They included shipping and handling in the price. They respond courteously to email. |

great for a while

| My son bought this thermometer for me. It was great for a while. I used it on my smoker. I loved the magnet on the back, to help keep me from dropping it. It measured so accurately for maybe a dozen uses and then suddenly in the middle of a cook it registered HI on the cooking temperature and never again came down. I just bought another one I hope it works longer. |

Working well for almost 3 years

I've had this for almost 3 years and I've had no problems with it. It's very nice to use and I've had no problems with the probe failing.
I should note that I only use it a couple of times a month.

Useless Junk

I purchased this product, reading that other reviewers had issues with the temperature probe not working after a couple uses, thinking "oh, it must be something THEY did, not a product defect". I am here to say I was wrong. The temperature probe is useless beyond only 1 use (my first hand experience). I cooked 1 product with successful results, and the next time I tried to use this Maverick thermometer, I realized how much of a piece of garbage this unit actually is. Don't get me wrong now, the product clearly has potential, showing what meats and what "doneness" temperature is appropriate, and the physical plastic/LCD unit itself doesn't seem bad. However, the whole purpose of the unit is to read the internal temperature of foods that are being cooked (hence it's an electronic thermometer). However, by the time I wanted to use this unit for the 2nd time, the temperature reading just said "HI", even when the probe was room temperature, or if the probe was put into another food item to monitor.
Let me also say that other reviewers have hypothesized that the failure of the temperature probe may be due to water getting beyond where the metal is crimped.. Well, that's clearly not what causes the thermometer unit to fail. I took extra care to wipe the probe with a moist cloth after the 1st use, and get water nowhere near the "crimped" area, and the unit still does not work after 1 use.
Believe myself and all the other reviewers who will warn you that the probe will stop working almost as soon as you plug it in, whether it's from 1, 2, or 3 uses, it will fail. Don't waste your money or time on this product.

Probe doesn't last long at all

I bought this in December 07 and it worked just great, you can manually adjust the "done" temperature which I did for a turkey at christmas, and it was PERFECT, unfortunately I have only gotten about 6 uses out of it and the probe died. The unit gives me the "HIGH" alarm as soon as I plug it. This began on its 4th use and I found that if I moved the wire at the probe I could eventually get it to work and I was able to get 2 more uses out of it. Mind you, I have never submerged the probe to wash it, I cleaned it with a damp sponge, NEVER pulled on the probe wire, never exposed it to temps above 400F and never used it in a barbeque. After reading the reviews here, I thought that handling it with "kid gloves" would make it last, I was wrong. The unit should come with several probes to at least get you through enough uses to where you can say "well, I guess I got my money's worth out of it.
